The Tongariro River is fishing nirvana – the best trout fishing river in the world. But it is only one of a number in the region that will test your fishing skills and temperament. Well organised scenic flights are available for those of you without the time or seeking a more sedate way to explore the wonderland that is Tongariro National Park. You will be able to see, amongst other things, where Bilbo Baggins threw the ring into the cauldron of Mount Doom, or Ngauruhoe as it is sometimes called, without having to make the climb. For a small town, Turangi punches well above its weight. Within a short distance of each other you can access a great choice of cafes and eateries, a challenging indoor climbing wall complex, covered heated swimming pools, Mini-putt Golf, Trout Hatchery & Native Whio (Blue Duck) recovery programme, not to mention a lot of pampering at the local Health Spa.
What better way to finish a day of activity and fun, than with a soak in a hot mineral pool, sourced directly from the earth below. This natural, therapeutic water has been filtered only, then cooled to 38/42°C (100/107°F). Relax in your own private pool and watch the changing patterns of the sky above.
Less than 2 hours drive from us, past the majestic mountains of the Central Plateau and down the picturesque Parapara Road (SH4, Raetihi - Whanganui), is a large, fully operational hill country sheep & beef farm.
