Tongariro Adventures

Reviews

"Ideal 'base camp' for Tongaririo Crossing, great hosts Great hosts, it felt like staying with family or friends. The shuttle service at prices similar to the large commercial buses is perfect, because the hosts take you from the property to the start of Tongariro Crossing and collect you at the end of the walk, with a cold drink! Very nicely located, away from the craziness of the larger tourist centres and on the border of the lake. The lake is at the end of the street, a one minute walk away from the room. It was great to have a swim after walking the Tongariro. We really enjoyed our stay and felt like everything was aimed at giving us a relaxing and pleasant holiday experience. Everything we needed and more :)"

"The hosts Michael and Barb were extremely helpful and accommodating. Despite sudden early departure because of the Corona Panademie, they stood by us with advice and action until the end and have allowed us a wonderful stay until then. They were approachable at all times without being intrusive."

"Breakfast was delivered each morning at the time chosen the night before. It was always fresh and delicious. Barb and Michael go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. We loved everything about our stay with them. the only down side was we had to leave, as we would have stayed in the area longer. A couple approached us while we were enjoying a pizza and wine at the Floating Rock Winery, and asked us how we ended up in Kuratau. Our answer was "Luck, just good luck""

"An excellent base to explore southern end of Lake Taupo with friendly, welcoming and very knowlegeable hosts. They provided us with transport to and from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and made sure we were properly provisioned. We were also able to hire a kayak from them and the property is very close to the lake edge and river. Our hosts advice was excellent. Breakfasts were excellent and provided an opportunity to chat to our hosts. It was also very useful to have access to clothes washing facilities."

"Beautiful location at the lake, great for a swim or kayak after a day trip, at walking distance from the house. Barb and Michael are very thoughtful and knowledgable hosts. The 'Boathouse' is more like a five star hotel room in the backyard of their house. Nice to have a meal in the midst of the grapevines at the vineyard around the corner. Delicious breakfast is served in the garden, where you can also make a bbq."

"This was an excellent find - spotless, very comfortable and in an incredible location. Barb was a fantastic host who took really good care of us, and who knows the area inside out. It’s also really good value for money. The breakfast is fresh and delicious and just what you need before you go off exploring and coming back to heated blankets in the bed really topped it off. We wish we had more time there! We’d not hesitate to go back or to recommend."

"We spent three nights with Barb and Michael! It was an unforgettable time! Starting with the accommodation, which was neatly decorated with attention to detail, then the very tasty breakfast with fresh fruit, cereals, various spreads and the best coffee, the location directly on Lake Taupo! The hospitality of Barb and Michael was incomparable. They put so much effort into making us feel completely at ease! And that's what we have! One evening they even made burgers for us! Thank you for the wonderful time!!!""

Highly, strongly, definitely recommend"

"Barb and Michael were amazing hosts. Very friendly, approachable, helpful and kind. They made us feel really relaxed and comfortable. The Boathouse we stayed at was beyond our expectations, photos don't give it justice. It's beautifully furnished, spotless and modern bathroom, spacious room, comfortable bed. Tasty breakfast was included, which we had outside, on the patio. Birds singing and running around the garden were a bonus! Barb drove us to the Tongariro Crossing and picked us up afterwards, then served delicious homemade burgers. She is very knowledgeable, answered all our questions about New Zealand and Tongariro/Kuratau area. Calm and pretty surroundings of the Boathouse made us feel rested and we didn't want to leave. Beach with amazing views is only two minutes away."

"If you’re looking for somewhere to stay to enjoy beautiful Lake Taupo and as a base to walk the Tongariro Crossing then look no further! The space is spotlessly clean, with lots of games to play, and books about the local area. Very comfortable beds and great living area space to relax in the evening. But what makes this place extra special are the wonderful owners, Barb and Michael. They made us feel so welcome, letting us use the bbq, sit up on the deck, offering us herbs and vegetables from the garden. They could not have done more for us and are clearly born hosts. We did not use the Tongariro Crossing shuttle service but they were so helpful in providing us with local knowledge and hints and tips. Healthy breakfast too! Just stay here!"

"Barb and Mike are great hosts. Fab boathouse, super comfortable bed, spotless and so comfortable with a 5 star breakfast. They made us feel so welcome and their recommendations for visiting the local area were spot on. Also, the lake is less than 2 minutes away. Put this on your list if you want a place to stay that is quiet, clean, and close to so many attractions. Loved it all."
